about
there’s been a lot of talk about creating safer spaces over the last few years. I really think it’s a great idea to solidify an idea that’s been a key idea of punk - inclusiveness is a cornerstone to DIY. writing these things down is important.
but there is a disconnect. there is a lack of accountability. there is a laziness. there is a willingness to be supportive of the idea but not a willingness to participate in action. at least in my experience, in milwaukee, at this time. but even beyond that, according to experiences of friends of mine from other cities.
i'm disappointed that so many good scenes are destroyed by chauvinistic behaviors that believe accommodating survivors, making space for all individuals regardless of race, sexual identity and orientation, gender identity, religion, etc makes them weaker or whatever. there is no room for this shit in diy. stop it. stop it now.
this release reaches to put that notion to rest. when you say you'll do better what i hear is that you'll say you'll do anything to create a false sense of accountability. don’t say you’ll do better. just do better. out your local rapist. kick the shit out of abusers. hold everyone accountable. most importantly, hold yourself accountable.
